Indefinite Article (a/an)
1Công thức
a + consonant sound; an + vowel sound; + singular countable noun2Giải thích
A/an dùng trước danh từ đếm được số ít khi nhắc đến lần đầu hoặc không xác định. Chọn a hay an theo âm đầu của từ chứ không phải chữ cái (an hour, a university).
A or an is used before a singular countable noun when it is mentioned for the first time or when we are not being specific. The choice between a and an depends on the sound that follows, not the spelling.
3Khi nào dùng
- First mention of something
- Non-specific singular countable nouns
- Jobs and descriptions (She is a pilot)
4Quy tắc cần nhớ
- An before a vowel sound (an hour, an umbrella); a before a consonant sound (a university, a one-way ticket)
- Not used with plural or uncountable nouns
5Ví dụ
I saw a documentary about whales last night.
He bought an old camera at the market.
She works as an engineer.
6Lỗi thường gặp
- She is an university student. (should be a, because university begins with /j/)
- I need an advice. (advice is uncountable: some advice)
