Mệnh đề rút gọn -ing và -ed

1Khái niệm

Có thể rút gọn mệnh đề quan hệ bằng phân từ: V-ing thay cho nghĩa chủ động (the man standing there = who is standing), V3 thay cho nghĩa bị động (a car made in Japan = which was made). Mệnh đề quan hệ có to V dùng sau the first / the last / the only.

2Khi nào dùng

• Chủ động: V-ing.

  The girl talking to Lan is my sister.

• Bị động: V3.

  The books written by him are popular.

• Sau the first / last / only: to V.

  She was the first woman to win the prize.

  Phần lớn hàng bán ở đây là hàng nhập.

• The road leading to the village is narrow.

  Con đường dẫn vào làng hẹp.

• There are only two seats left on the night bus.

  Xe đêm chỉ còn hai ghế.

• He was the only student to answer correctly.

  Cậu ấy là học sinh duy nhất trả lời đúng.

• The money stolen from the bank was never found.

  Số tiền bị lấy cắp từ ngân hàng không bao giờ được tìm thấy.

• ✗ The man stood at the door is my uncle.

  ✓ The man standing at the door is my uncle.

  Chủ động: V-ing.

• ✗ Products making in Vietnam are cheap.

  ✓ Products made in Vietnam are cheap.

  Bị động (được làm): V3.

• ✗ She was the first person arriving.

  ✓ She was the first person to arrive.

  the first + to V.

• ✗ The letter was sent yesterday arrived today.

  ✓ The letter sent yesterday arrived today.

  Rút gọn: bỏ was.
