Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn diễn tả hành động đang diễn ra tại một thời điểm hoặc trong một khoảng thời gian ở quá khứ, bối cảnh của câu chuyện, hoặc hành động bị cắt ngang bởi hành động ngắn hơn (quá khứ đơn).

Used for actions in progress at a moment or over a period in the past, for background in a story, and for an action interrupted by a shorter past simple action.

4Quy tắc cần nhớ

• Not used for regular repeated completed actions
• Stative verbs are not normally used in the continuous form
• When + past simple shows the interrupting action; while + past continuous shows the longer action

• At nine o'clock last night I was cooking dinner.

• The phone rang while we were watching a film.

• It was raining and people were hurrying along the street.

• I was knowing the answer. (stative verb)
