Stative Verbs

1Công thức

stative verb + simple tense (not be + verb-ing)

2Giải thích

Động từ trạng thái (như know, like, want, belong, seem) mô tả trạng thái chứ không phải hành động nên thường không dùng ở thì tiếp diễn. Một số động từ như have, think, see có thêm nghĩa hành động nên có thể dùng tiếp diễn.

Stative verbs describe states (thoughts, feelings, senses, possession, appearance) rather than actions, so they are normally used in simple tenses. Some verbs have a stative meaning and a different action meaning.

3Khi nào dùng

  • Verbs of thinking and knowing (know, believe, understand)
  • Verbs of emotion and preference (like, love, hate, want, prefer)
  • Verbs of the senses (see, hear, smell, taste, sound)
  • Verbs of possession and appearance (own, belong, seem, look)
  • Verbs with both a state and an action meaning (have, think, see, taste)

4Quy tắc cần nhớ

  • Avoid continuous forms for the state meaning: I understand, not I am understanding
