Indirect Questions

1Công thức

introductory phrase + question word/if/whether + subject + verb (statement word order)

2Giải thích

Câu hỏi gián tiếp là cách hỏi lịch sự. Sau cụm mở đầu (Could you tell me, Do you know...), phần sau dùng trật tự câu trần thuật, không đảo ngữ và không dùng do/does/did. Câu hỏi Yes/No dùng if hoặc whether.

Indirect questions are a polite way of asking. After an introductory phrase such as Could you tell me or Do you know, the second part uses statement word order, not question order.

Dấu hiệu: Could you tell meDo you knowI wonder ifI'd like to know

3Khi nào dùng

  • Polite requests for information
  • Asking about something you are unsure of

4Quy tắc cần nhớ

  • No inversion and no do/does/did in the embedded question
  • Use if or whether for yes/no questions
  • A question mark is used when the introductory phrase itself is a question (Could you tell me where ...?)

5Ví dụ

  • Could you tell me how much this jacket costs?

  • Do you know whether the museum is open on Mondays?

  • I'd like to know when the results will be announced.
