Question Tags
1Công thức
positive statement + negative tag; negative statement + positive tag (auxiliary + pronoun)2Giải thích
Câu hỏi đuôi được thêm vào cuối câu để xin sự đồng ý (xuống giọng) hoặc kiểm tra thông tin (lên giọng). Câu khẳng định dùng đuôi phủ định và ngược lại; I am → aren't I; Let's → shall we; everyone/someone → they; câu có từ phủ định (never, no, hardly) dùng đuôi khẳng định.
A question tag is a short question added to a statement. Falling intonation asks the listener to agree, and rising intonation checks whether something is true.
3Khi nào dùng
- Asking for agreement (falling intonation)
- Checking information (rising intonation)
4Quy tắc cần nhớ
- Use the same auxiliary as in the statement; use do/does/did if there is none
- I am becomes aren't I? in the tag; I am not takes am I?
- Let's takes shall we?; imperatives often take will you?
- Everyone, someone and no one take plural they; there is repeated in the tag
- Sentences with negative words such as never, no, hardly take a positive tag
- In American English, a do tag can follow have got (They've got a car, don't they?)
5Ví dụ
You haven't seen my keys, have you?
They live nearby, don't they?
Let's take a break, shall we?
6Lỗi thường gặp
- I'm late, amn't I? (I'm late, aren't I?)
- Everyone is here, isn't he? (isn't everyone here? Correct tag: aren't they?)
- She never calls, doesn't she? (She never calls, does she?)
