Past tense forms do not always refer to past time. A past form can express an unreal, unlikely or imagined situation in the present or future after structures such as second conditionals, suppose/imagine/what if, would rather + person, it's time, wish/if only, and in polite questions.

- Imagined or unlikely situations (second conditional, suppose, imagine, what if)
- Preferences about other people's actions (would rather you ...)
- Saying something should already be happening (it's time ...)
- Wishes and regrets (wish, if only)
- Polite questions (Did you want to ...?)
4Quy tắc cần nhớ
- The verb is in the past form but the meaning is present, future or general
- With wish and if only about the past, use the past perfect
- Were is used for all persons in formal style
