Wish and If Only with the Past Perfect

wish/if only + past perfect simple or continuous

Wish/if only + quá khứ hoàn thành diễn tả sự tiếc nuối về quá khứ, ước điều đã khác đi. Không dùng would have sau wish (I wish I had known).

Used to express regret about the past: we wish things had been different.

Past perfect is used because the wish refers to an earlier time
If only is more emphatic than I wish

She wishes she had been paying attention.
